2017 Daytona Beach Half Marathon set for Feb. 5

Volusia County Government and Daytona International Speedway have announced the 2017 Daytona Beach Half Marathon will be at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, three weeks prior to the 59th annual Daytona 500, NASCAR’s biggest, richest and most prestigious race. Registration opens July 1.

Sponsored by Brown and Brown Insurance, the 2017 event includes a half marathon, a two-person half marathon relay, a 3.1-mile lap the track, and a new Speedway Challenge which allows runners to complete both the half marathon or relay and the 3.1-mile lap the track.  The Speedway Challenge is limited to the first 1,000 runners who register and finishers will receive a prestigious third medal.

“I think adding the Speedway Challenge will be very popular for runners who can complete both distances,” said Volusia County Manager Jim Dinneen, an avid runner.

The 2016 Daytona Beach Half Marathon attracted 2,748 runners, more than double the number of runners in 2014.“We were very pleased with the turnout,” Dinneen continued.  “The feedback was excellent.  I am confident we’ll see an increase in registrations for next year’s event.  We continue to make adjustments based on runner comments.  I think moving the start time to 7:30 is a big change that will be well received.”

The Daytona Beach Half Marathon features a breathtaking course that takes runners from the historic asphalt (flat surface) of Daytona International Speedway to International Speedway Boulevard leading to a panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean atop the International Speedway Boulevard highrise bridge to the sparkling, white, hard-packed sands of Daytona Beach and then back to the start/finish line inside the iconic motorsports facility.

Early bird registration from July 1 to October 31 is $80 for the Daytona Beach Half Marathon, $70 for the half marathon relay, $30 for the 3.1-mile Lap the Track, and $135 for the Speedway Challenge. Some of the race features include:Course marshals dressed in race-themed costumes Pace teams Race-themed finisher medals Race-themed awards for overall, masters and age group winners Ice towels for all finishers (weather permitting) Beach towel with finish line flags and race logo (half marathon and relay participants only) Best "race" costume contest during awards ceremony After-race breakfast
